The word " Phi Tong Luang " is the name of the people of Mlabri hilltribe , called by villagers in the North because the people of this tribe do not like to live permanently in one place. That is, they like wandering in jungles to get food by hunting or picking fruits.

They build huts roofed with leaves to stay while going out to look for food but when there is not enough food there and they find it difficult to get food, they always move to other areas when the leaves of the huts roofs just become yellow. Beside, whenever they see strangers or other tribes, they are suspicious or not trusty and then flee away immediately. Therefore, they are called Phi Tong Luang but they prefer the name
" Mlabri " they are not satisfied with the name "Phi Tong Luang". So some of them complained we are still alive, not dead, why are we called Phi (ghost) ?.

The word " Phi Tong Luang " has been offically used by the scholars interested in studying and researching on the lives of these people since 2469 B.E. (1926) or 83 years ago. They are also called many names such as Kha Tong Luang, Yumbri or Mlabri and called Maku by Hmong hilltribe but they call themselves Mlabri or forester.
